The series is based on the popular Naver webcomic Yumi's Cells, written and illustrated by Lee Dong-Gun, which was serialized from April 1, 2015, to November 13, 2020. The television adaptation was directed by Lee Sang-Yeob and Joo Sang-Kyu, with scripts penned by a team including Song Jae-Jung and Kim Kyung-Ran.

Season 2 originally premiered on the streaming platform TVING, running from June 10 to July 22, 2022.
