When the Devil Calls Your Name (Korean: 악마가 너의 이름을 부를 때) is a South Korean television drama series that aired on the cable network tvN in 2019. The series, which consists of 16 episodes, was broadcast on Wednesday and Thursday nights at 21:30, beginning on July 31 and concluding on September 19, 2019. The narrative is inspired by the 18th-century German play Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
Plot
The story follows Ha Rib, a successful songwriter who has achieved wealth and prestige. However, his success is built on a dark secret: he sold his soul to the devil, who appears in the form of a top actor named Mo Tae-Kang. As his contract nears its expiration, Ha Rib discovers that his fame was achieved by stealing the talent and life of a woman named Lee Kyung. He subsequently embarks on a journey to restore his own life and rectify the harm caused to Lee Kyung and those around him, ultimately confronting the true meaning of existence.
Production
The series was directed by Min Jin-Ki, with a screenplay written by Noh Hye-Young and Go Nae-Ri. The first script reading for the production took place in March 2019 in the Sangnam neighborhood of Seoul, South Korea. The series occupied the Wednesday and Thursday time slot on tvN, following the conclusion of Search: WWW and preceding the premiere of Miss Lee.
