Villain (2010 Film)
Villain, known in Japan as Akunin (悪人), is a 2010 Japanese drama film directed by Sang-il Lee. The film is based on the 2007 novel of the same name by Shuichi Yoshida, who also co-wrote the screenplay. The narrative examines the lives of individuals connected by a tragic crime and the complex moral ambiguities surrounding their actions.

Plot
Yuichi Shimizu (Satoshi Tsumabuki) is a lonely man living in a rural fishing village in Nagasaki, where he cares for his aging grandparents. His life changes after he meets Yoshino Ishibashi (Hikari Mitsushima), an insurance saleswoman from Fukuoka, through an online dating site. Their encounter results in Yoshino's murder. While a wealthy university student, Keigo Masuo (Masaki Okada), becomes the primary suspect in the investigation, Yuichi continues his life in secret, burdened by the weight of his actions.
Seeking connection, Yuichi begins an email correspondence with Mitsuyo Magome (Eri Fukatsu), a woman from Saga who leads a mundane life. Despite the growing media coverage of the murder and his status as a wanted criminal, Mitsuyo chooses to run away with Yuichi. Their flight forces their respective families to confront the consequences of the crime and the nature of the people involved.

The film was directed by Sang-il Lee and produced by Genki Kawamura. It was distributed by Toho and released in Japan on September 11, 2010. The screenplay was adapted from Shuichi Yoshida's novel, which was published by Asahi Shimbun in 2007.
