Tokkai: Non-performing Loans Special Collection Department (Japanese: トッカイ～不良債権特別回収部～) is a Japanese television drama series that aired on the WOWOW network in 2021. The series consists of 12 episodes and was broadcast in the Sunday 22:00 time slot from January 17 to April 4, 2021.

Background and Production

The drama is based on the novel Tokkai: Bubble no Kaijin wo Oitsumeta Otokotachi, written by Hidetoshi Kiyotake and published by Kodansha on April 24, 2019. The series was directed by Setsuro Wakamatsu and Yoshinori Muratani, with a screenplay by Masashi Todayama.

Plot

Set in 1996, the story follows the aftermath of the collapse of Japan's asset price bubble. Akira Shibasaki, portrayed by Hideaki Ito, is an employee in the loan department of the Yotsubashi branch of Aoba Bank. He is reassigned to a government-run housing financial bond management organization tasked with the difficult responsibility of collecting non-performing loans from bankrupt housing loan companies. The narrative centers on the professional challenges faced by a diverse group of employees—ranging from bank staff to former housing loan company workers—as they attempt to recover funds while navigating complex financial and social pressures.
