The Unusual Family (Korean: 별난가족; RR: Byeolnan Gajok) is a South Korean daily television drama that aired on KBS1 from May 2 to November 25, 2016. The series consists of 149 episodes and was broadcast on weekdays at 20:25 KST.
Plot
The story follows Kang Dan-Yi (Lee Shi-A), a woman deeply connected to her rural hometown. She travels to Seoul with the goal of distributing agricultural products from her village at competitive prices. To achieve this, she secures a position as a merchandiser at a home shopping company called Good Morning Home Shopping.
In contrast, her niece, Kang Sam-Wol (Gil Eun-Hye), arrives in Seoul with different motivations. Disinterested in her rural roots, she seeks a more affluent lifestyle and works as a show host at the same company as her aunt. The narrative explores their conflicting ambitions and personal journeys within the corporate environment.
Production
The series was directed by Lee Deok-Gun, with a screenplay written by Son Ji-Hye and Jung Ji-Eun. During the casting process, actor Lee Hyun-Jin was initially selected to portray the character Sul Dong-Tak. However, he withdrew from the production due to health concerns, and Shin Ji-Hoon was subsequently cast in the role.
Broadcast History
The Unusual Family occupied the KBS1 Monday through Friday 20:25 time slot. It followed the conclusion of the series Sweet Home, Sweet Honey and was succeeded by Still Loving You on November 28, 2016.
