The Uncanny Counter
The Uncanny Counter (Korean: 경이로운 소문; RR: Kyeongirowoon Somoon) is a South Korean fantasy television series that aired on OCN from November 28, 2020, to January 24, 2021. The series is based on the webcomic of the same name by Jang Yi, which began serialization on Daum Webtoon in 2018.
Premise
The story follows a group of individuals known as "Counters" who are tasked with hunting down malevolent spirits that have escaped the afterlife to prey on humans. To maintain their cover while operating in the human world, the group disguises themselves as employees of a local noodle restaurant.
The narrative centers on So Mun, a high school student who becomes the youngest member of the group. Following a suspicious car accident in his childhood that resulted in the death of his parents and left him with a permanent leg injury, So Mun discovers his latent abilities. Other members of the team include Ga Mo-Tak, a former police officer who suffers from memory loss; Do Ha-Na, who possesses the ability to sense evil spirits and read memories through touch; Chu Mae-Ok, the team's anchor and the restaurant's chef; and Choi Jang-Mool, the group's financier and the first Counter in Korea.
Production
The series was directed by Yoo Sun-Dong and Park Bong-Sub. The screenplay underwent changes during production, with Yeo Ji-Na writing episodes 1 through 12, followed by Yoo Sun-Dong for episode 13, and Kim Sae-Bom for the final episodes. The first script reading for the cast took place on June 30, 2020. During its broadcast, the network OCN delayed the airing of episodes 9 and 10 by one week, moving them from late December 2020 to January 2 and 3, 2021.
