The Silent Sea

The Silent Sea (Korean: 고요의 바다; RR: Goyoui Bada) is a South Korean science fiction mystery television series released on Netflix on December 24, 2021. The series consists of eight episodes and is based on the 2014 short film The Sea of Tranquility, which was also directed by Choi Hang-Yong.

Premise

The story is set in a future where Earth suffers from severe water and food shortages caused by global desertification. A specialized team, including soldier Han Yun-Jae (Gong Yoo) and scientist Song Ji-An (Bae Doo-Na), is dispatched to the moon to retrieve a mysterious sample from an abandoned research facility known as the Balhae Lunar Research Station.

Production

The series was produced for Netflix, with Jung Woo-Sung serving as a producer. The project is an expansion of the 2014 short film The Sea of Tranquility, with director Choi Hang-Yong returning to helm the series. Principal photography for the production began in South Korea in August 2020. The series marked the first acting role for Lee Joon following his discharge from the South Korean military on December 19, 2019.
