The Prison (Korean: 프리즌; RR: Peurizeun) is a 2017 South Korean crime action film written and directed by Na Hyeon. The narrative follows a criminal syndicate that uses a prison as a base of operations to execute elaborate crimes under the cover of night.

Plot

The film centers on Jung Ik-ho (Han Suk-kyu), a powerful inmate who exerts absolute control over the prison population and its staff. The facility serves as a front for a sophisticated criminal network that leaves the prison at night to commit crimes. The dynamic changes when Song Yoo-gun (Kim Rae-won), a former detective with a perfect arrest record, is incarcerated following charges of hit-and-run, destruction of evidence, and bribery. Ik-ho takes an interest in the newcomer, whose volatile temperament and resolve challenge the established order within the facility.

Production

The film was directed by Na Hyeon, who also wrote the screenplay. Principal photography for the production commenced on February 14, 2016, and concluded on May 22, 2016. The film was distributed by Showbox and released in South Korea on March 23, 2017.

Reception

At the 54th Daejong Film Awards held on October 25, 2017, the film received the award for Best Lighting.
