The Nokdu Flower

The Nokdu Flower (Korean: 녹두꽃 - 사람, 하늘이 되다) is a South Korean television drama series that aired on SBS from April 26 to July 13, 2019. Directed by Shin Kyung-Soo and written by Jung Hyun-Min, the series consists of 48 episodes and is set against the backdrop of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, which occurred between 1894 and 1895.

Plot

The narrative centers on the lives of two half-brothers who find themselves on opposing sides of the Donghak Peasant Revolution. Baek Yi-Kang (played by Cho Jung-Seok) is the eldest son of a wealthy family, yet he is marginalized due to his mother's low social status. His younger half-brother, Baek Yi-Hyun (played by Yoon Si-Yoon), is portrayed as intelligent and refined, enjoying a higher social standing. Their paths diverge as the political turmoil of the revolution unfolds. Alongside them, Song Ja-In (played by Han Ye-Ri), the daughter of a prominent peddler group leader, strives to become a successful merchant in Joseon.

Production

The series was originally developed under the working title Woogeumti. The initial script reading for the cast and crew took place in January 2019 at the SBS Ilsan Production Center in Tanhyun, South Korea. The show occupied the Friday and Saturday 22:00 time slot on SBS, succeeding The Fiery Priest and preceding Doctor John.
