The Merciless (2017 Film)

The Merciless (Korean: 불한당: 나쁜 놈들의 세상; RR: Boolhandang: Nabbeun Nomdeului Sesang) is a 2017 South Korean crime-noir film directed by Byun Sung-Hyun. The film explores the complex power dynamics and shifting loyalties between two men within the criminal underworld.

Plot

The story centers on Han Jae-Ho (Sul Kyung-Gu), a powerful inmate who exerts significant influence over prison life while maintaining his position as a high-ranking member of an external criminal organization. His ambition is to ascend to the top of the gang upon his release. His trajectory changes when he encounters a new prisoner, Jo Hyun-Soo (Yim Si-Wan), who refuses to conform to the established prison hierarchy or submit to Jae-Ho's authority.

Production

The film was directed by Byun Sung-Hyun, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Kim Min-Soo. Principal photography commenced on August 18, 2016, and concluded on December 10, 2016. The film received international attention when it was selected for the "Midnight Screenings" section at the 70th Cannes Film Festival in May 2017.
