The Man from Nowhere (2010 Film)
The Man from Nowhere (Korean: 아저씨; RR: Ahjeosshi) is a 2010 South Korean action drama film written and directed by Lee Jeong-beom. The film follows the story of Cha Tae-sik, a quiet and reclusive pawn shop owner with a mysterious past, who embarks on a violent mission to rescue a young girl named So-mi after she and her mother become entangled with a dangerous criminal organization.
Production
Director Lee Jeong-beom began writing the screenplay in January 2010, completing the first draft within three months. The project underwent significant revisions during development. Originally, the protagonist was conceived as a 60-year-old former North Korean agent. However, after actor Won Bin expressed interest in the role, the script was rewritten to feature a younger character, adjusting the protagonist's background to suit the casting.
Filming commenced in December 2009. The production experienced minor casting changes, such as the replacement of actor Yang Ik-jun with Kim Tae-hun in the role of Detective Kim Chi-gon due to creative differences. Technical execution included complex stunt work, such as a notable sequence where the lead actor jumps from a window while being pursued by police; this scene required multiple takes and the use of wire rigs for both the actor and the cameraman.
Release and Reception
The film was released in South Korea on August 5, 2010. It achieved immediate commercial success, opening at number one at the domestic box office with 702,631 admissions during its opening weekend (August 6–8). It maintained the top position in ticket sales for five consecutive weeks, ultimately reaching a total of 6,170,611 admissions.
