The Housemaid (Korean: 하녀; RR: Hanyeo) is a 2010 South Korean psychological thriller film directed by Im Sang-soo. The film is a remake of the 1960 classic of the same name directed by Kim Ki-young. It explores themes of class disparity, power dynamics, and domestic betrayal within a wealthy household.

Production

Director Im Sang-soo began preparations for the project in early 2009, with the screenplay finalized by October 2009. Principal photography commenced in early 2010. The film features a notable cast, including Jeon Do-yeon as the titular housemaid, Eun-yi, and Lee Jung-jae as the wealthy patriarch, Hoon. Seo Woo portrays the wife, Hae-ra, while veteran actress Youn Yuh-jung plays the role of the older housekeeper, Byeong-sik.

Release and Reception

The film premiered at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d'Or. Following its festival run, the film secured international distribution deals in several markets, including France, Greece, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand. It received recognition at various domestic and international film festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival and the Sitges Film Festival.

Awards

The film garnered significant critical attention and multiple awards, particularly for its performances and technical production. Youn Yuh-jung received several honors for Best Supporting Actress, including wins at the Blue Dragon Film Awards, the Korean Film Awards, and the Asian Film Awards. The film also received accolades for its musical score and art direction.
