The Forbidden Marriage

The Forbidden Marriage (Korean: 금혼령, 조선 혼인 금지령) is a South Korean television series that aired on MBC from December 9, 2022, to January 21, 2023. The drama is based on the web novel Geumhonryung, Joseon Honin Geumjiryung, written by Chun Zi-Hye, which was serialized on Naver from 2015 to 2020.

Plot

Set during the Joseon dynasty, the story follows King Lee Heon (Kim Young-Dae), who has struggled to move on from the death of his wife seven years prior. In his grief, he implements a royal edict known as geumhonryung, which prohibits all single women in the nation from marrying until the king finds a new queen. This ban causes widespread public frustration.

The narrative shifts when Ye So-Rang (Park Ju-Hyun), a swindler who claims to interpret marital harmony, is arrested. To escape punishment, she claims to be possessed by the spirit of the king's late wife. This deception brings her into the royal palace, where she must maintain the ruse while interacting with the king and Officer Lee Shin-Won (Kim Woo-Seok).
