The Descendants of Hong Gil-dong
The Descendants of Hong Gil-dong (Korean: 홍길동의 후예) is a 2009 South Korean action-comedy film directed by Jeong Yong-ki. The film reimagines the legendary Joseon Dynasty folk hero Hong Gil-dong as a real historical figure whose descendants continue his legacy of social justice in the modern era.
Plot
The story follows Hong Mu-hyeok, played by Lee Beom-soo, who is the 18th-generation descendant of the mythical Hong Gil-dong. While he maintains a modest life as a high school music teacher, he operates as a modern-day vigilante by night, mirroring the heroic deeds of his ancestor. His primary antagonist is Lee Jeong-min, a ruthless businessman who frequently engages in bribery and corruption to secure personal gain.
Production
The film was directed by Jeong Yong-ki with a screenplay written by Park Jung-woo. Principal photography for the production commenced on July 31, 2009. The film was distributed by SK Telecom and released in South Korea on November 26, 2009, with a total runtime of 117 minutes.
