Plot

Following his exile to the remote island of Heuksando, the scholar and bureaucrat Jung Yak-Jeon becomes deeply interested in the marine life of the region. He attempts to compile a book documenting these species but lacks the practical knowledge of the local environment. He approaches a young fisherman, Chang-Dae, to collaborate on the project. Initially, Chang-Dae refuses to assist a man he views as a criminal. Eventually, the two reach an agreement: Jung Yak-Jeon will provide academic instruction, while Chang-Dae will share his expertise on the sea. As their relationship develops, ideological differences emerge regarding their motivations for learning and success.

Production

The film is based on the historical figures Jung Yak-Jeon (1758–1816) and Jang Chang-Dae. The title Jasaneobo refers to the actual scientific work written by Jung Yak-Jeon during his exile. Principal photography for the film commenced on August 19, 2019, and concluded on October 31, 2019.
