The Battleship Island (2017 Film)

The Battleship Island (Korean: 군함도; RR: Goonhamdo) is a 2017 South Korean historical action film directed by Ryoo Seung-wan. The narrative is set during the Japanese colonial period and centers on a group of approximately 400 Koreans who are forced into labor at a coal mine on Hashima Island, often referred to as "Battleship Island" due to its appearance. The film depicts their struggle for survival and their attempt to escape the island.

Plot

The story follows three primary characters whose lives converge on Hashima Island. Lee Kang-ok (Hwang Jung-min), a bandmaster at the Kyungsung Hotel, is deceived into traveling to Japan with his daughter, So-hee (Kim Soo-ahn), only to be forcibly sent to the island. Choi Chil-sung (So Ji-sub), a prominent fighter from Kyungsung, struggles to navigate the harsh conditions of the labor camp. Meanwhile, Park Moo-young (Song Joong-ki), an operative for the Korean independence movement, infiltrates the island on a mission to rescue a key figure.

Production

Principal photography for the film commenced on June 17, 2016, in Cheongju, South Korea. Production concluded on December 20, 2016, at a set constructed in Chuncheon, South Korea. The film was distributed by CJ Entertainment.

Reception and Awards

The film received recognition for its production design and performances. At the 38th Blue Dragon Film Awards in 2017, Lee Hoo-kyung won for Best Art Design, and Kim Soo-ahn received a Popularity Award. Additionally, at the 1st The Seoul Awards, Lee Jung-hyun was honored as Best Supporting Actress, and Kim Soo-ahn received a Special Actress award.
