Steel Cold Winter (2013 Film)

Steel Cold Winter (Korean: 소녀; RR: Sonyeo) is a 2013 South Korean mystery-thriller film directed by Choi Jin-Seong. The film explores themes of isolation, social ostracization, and the consequences of past trauma within a small, rural mountain community.

Plot

The story follows Yoon-Soo (Kim Shi-Hoo), a student who moves from Seoul to a remote mountain village following the suicide of a close friend. Struggling with guilt, he attempts to adjust to his new environment. He soon becomes intrigued by Hae-Won (Kim Yoon-Hye), a local girl who lives in isolation with her mentally ill father. Hae-Won is treated as an outcast by the villagers, who harbor rumors about her and her family. As Yoon-Soo grows closer to Hae-Won, he discovers that she possesses unsettling knowledge about the town's residents and is hiding a dark secret of her own.

Production

The film was directed by Choi Jin-Seong, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Choi Yoon-Jin. It was produced by CJ Entertainment. During the production, lead actress Kim Yoon-Hye underwent intensive training for her role, which required ice skating. According to director Choi Jin-Seong, Kim had no prior experience with the sport but practiced for three weeks and performed approximately 99% of her own skating sequences in the film.

Release and Festivals

Steel Cold Winter held its world premiere at the 18th Busan International Film Festival on October 4, 2013, as part of the New Currents section. It was subsequently released in South Korean theaters on November 7, 2013. The film was also featured at international events, including the 2014 Deauville Asian Film Festival and the 2014 Fantasia Film Festival.
