Plot Summary

The story follows Hyun-soo (Kwon Sang-woo), a teenager who transfers to Jungmoon High School. His family hopes to capitalize on the rising land values in the developing Gangnam area. Upon arrival, Hyun-soo encounters a rigid and often violent school environment characterized by severe corporal punishment and intense hierarchies among students. He eventually befriends Woo-sik (Lee Jung-jin), a charismatic student, and the two bond over their shared admiration for martial artist Bruce Lee.

The narrative explores the protagonists' romantic interest in a girl named Eun-ju (Han Ga-in). As social pressures mount and conflicts with the school's student patrol captain, Jong-hoon (Lee Jong-hyeok), escalate, Hyun-soo is pushed to his breaking point. The film culminates in a confrontation that reflects the protagonist's internal struggle against the oppressive systems surrounding him.

Production and Themes

Director Yu Ha utilized the setting of 1978 Seoul to mirror the social climate of the era. The film is noted for its depiction of the educational system, where teachers frequently employed physical violence to maintain order. The title Maljukgeori janhoksa translates literally to "Cruel History of Maljuk Street," referencing the neighborhood where the school is located. The film serves as a critique of the authoritarian structures present in both the school and the broader South Korean society of the late 1970s.
