South Bound (2013 Film)
South Bound (Korean: 남쪽으로 튀어) is a 2013 South Korean comedy-drama film directed by Yim Soon-rye. The film is based on the 2005 Japanese novel of the same name by author Hideo Okuda. The production, which explores themes of family dynamics and social nonconformity, was released in South Korea on February 7, 2013.
Plot
The story centers on Choi Hae-kab, a middle-aged man who maintains a staunch, nonconformist ideology rooted in his past as a student activist. He lives with his wife, An Bong-hee, and their three children. Hae-kab rejects conventional societal norms, such as working a standard job or adhering to traditional educational systems for his children. His unconventional lifestyle and outspoken nature draw the attention of the Public Security Bureau, which monitors his activities.
The family's life is disrupted when Man-deok, an old friend from Hae-kab's childhood on the remote Deul Island, arrives in Seoul. Man-deok seeks help to prevent the sale of the island to a corporation planning to develop it into a resort. Motivated by his connection to his roots and his desire to protect his former home, Hae-kab decides to relocate his family to Deul Island to join the struggle against the development project.

Production
The film was directed by Yim Soon-rye, with a screenplay adapted by Lee Gye-byeok, Na Hyeon, Choi Moon-suk, and lead actor Kim Yun-seok. Principal photography for the film commenced on May 27, 2012, and concluded on September 27, 2012. The film was distributed by Lotte Entertainment.
