Silenced (2011 Film)

Silenced (Korean: 도가니; RR: Dogani) is a 2011 South Korean drama film directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk. The film is based on the 2009 novel The Crucible by Kong Ji-young, which was inspired by a series of real-life incidents involving the systemic physical and sexual abuse of students at a school for the hearing-impaired in Gwangju, South Korea.

Development and Production

The film adaptation was initiated by actor Gong Yoo, who read Kong Ji-young's novel while serving in the military. Upon receiving leave, he contacted the author to propose a film adaptation, expressing a desire to highlight the plight of underprivileged children. Filming commenced in February 2011. Notably, the actress who portrayed Min-soo's grandmother is the real-life grandmother of director Hwang Dong-hyuk.

Plot Summary

Kang In-ho (Gong Yoo) is a newly appointed teacher at a school for the hearing-impaired in the fictional city of Mujin. Upon arrival, he encounters significant financial pressure and is coerced into paying a substantial bribe to the school's administration to secure his position. As he begins his tenure, he notices the students exhibiting signs of distress and fear. After witnessing a staff member physically abusing a student, In-ho partners with Seo Yoo-jin (Jung Yu-mi), an employee at a local human rights center, to uncover and expose the systemic abuse occurring within the institution.

Reception and Awards

The film received critical acclaim and significant public attention upon its release on September 22, 2011. It was recognized at several international film festivals and domestic award ceremonies, including the 32nd Blue Dragon Film Awards for Best Music and the 3rd KOFRA Film Awards for Best Film.
