Shochiku Co., Ltd.
Shochiku Co., Ltd. (松竹株式会社) is a major Japanese film studio, theatre production company, and distributor with a long history in the entertainment industry.

History and Corporate Development
The enterprise was originally formed in 1895 as a producer of traditional Kabuki theatrical performances. Over subsequent decades, the organization expanded its operations into motion picture production, initiating film production activities in 1921.
During the evolution of early Japanese cinema, Shochiku implemented significant structural changes within the domestic industry. It became recognized as an early studio to phase out traditional female impersonators (onnagata) in favor of modern casting practices. Additionally, the studio sought to integrate Western production methods modeled after Hollywood systems, including the adoption of formal star systems and dedicated sound stages.
Current Status
Headquartered in Tsukiji, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, Shochiku operates as one of the oldest continuously operating major film studios in Japan, maintaining active involvement in both live theatrical arts and cinematic production.
