Shido Nakamura: Japanese Actor and Kabuki Performer

Shido Nakamura (born September 14, 1972) is a prominent Japanese film, television, and stage actor, as well as a traditional kabuki performer. Born in Tokyo, Japan, he comes from a theatrical lineage, counting actor Katsuo Nakamura as an uncle. Standing 177 cm tall, Nakamura has established a versatile career spanning major cinematic blockbusters, historical television dramas, and voice acting.

Acting Career

Nakamura gained widespread recognition early in his film career with his performance in the 2002 sports drama Ping Pong, directed by Fumihiko Sori. His portrayal of the character Dragon earned him critical acclaim, including the Rookie of the Year award at the 26th Japan Academy Prize and the Best Newcomer award at the 45th Blue Ribbon Awards in 2003.

Over the decades, Nakamura has built a diverse filmography, appearing in international productions and domestic hits alike. Notable film credits include Clint Eastwood's war drama Letters from Iwo Jima (2006), John Woo's historical epic Red Cliff (2008) and its sequel, and various adaptations of the popular manga series Death Note, where he provided the voice for the Shinigami character Ryuk. His later film work includes appearances in Monster (2023), Lumberjack The Monster (2023), and historical drama projects.

Television and Stage Work

In addition to his film projects, Nakamura has maintained a robust presence in Japanese television dramas (dorama), particularly in historical taiga dramas broadcast by NHK. His television credits include major roles in Shinsengumi! (2004), Yae no Sakura (2013), and the 2022 historical series The 13 Lords of the Shogun, in which he portrayed Kagetoki Kajiwara. He has also taken on directing work, contributing to the 2008 anthology film R246 Story.
