Rugal (South Korean TV Series)

Rugal is a South Korean television series that aired on the cable network OCN in 2020. Directed by Kang Cheol-Woo, the drama is based on the webcomic of the same name by Rilmae, which was first published in October 2016. The series consists of 16 episodes and was broadcast on Saturdays and Sundays at 22:50.

Plot

The story follows Kang Ki-Beom, an elite detective who is investigating a criminal organization known as Argos. After his wife is murdered by masked men sent by the organization, Kang Ki-Beom is brutally attacked, resulting in the loss of his eyesight. He is subsequently framed for murder and hospitalized. While in this vulnerable state, he is recruited by the National Intelligence Service (NIS) to join a special team called Rugal. Through the use of advanced biotechnology, Kang Ki-Beom receives artificial eyeballs that grant him enhanced capabilities, which he uses alongside his team to dismantle criminal organizations.

Production

The series was adapted from the webcomic Rugal by Rilmae. The first script reading for the production took place in October 2019 at the Donga Digital Media Center in Sangam-dong, Seoul. The series occupied the OCN Saturday and Sunday 22:30 time slot, succeeding Tell Me What You Saw and preceding Team Bulldog: Off-duty Investigation.

Cast

The series features an ensemble cast including Choi Jin-Hyuk as Kang Ki-Beom, Jo Dong-Hyuk as Han Tae-Woong, and Jung Hye-In as Song Mi-Na. Other notable cast members include Park Sung-Woong as Hwang Deuk-Gu, Kim Min-Sang as Choi Geun-Cheol, and Park Sun-Ho as Lee Gwang-Cheol.
