Romance Joe (2012 Film)

Romance Joe (Korean: 로맨스 조; RR: Romaenseu Jo) is a 2012 South Korean arthouse film written and directed by Lee Kwang-kuk. The film is noted for its complex, nested narrative structure, which explores the act of storytelling and the intersection of memory and fiction.

Plot

The film begins with a director suffering from writer's block while staying in a motel to work on a script. When a delivery girl arrives at his room, she shares a story with him, initiating a series of interconnected narratives. The central story concerns a man named Romance Joe, an assistant director who decides to quit his job and return to his hometown after learning of the suicide of a popular actress, Woo Joo-hyun. As he reflects on his life and contemplates his own future, he encounters individuals from his past, leading to a meditation on intimacy and personal history.

Production

The film was produced by Yim Soon-rye, with cinematography by Jee Yune-jeong. Principal photography for the project took place between May 22 and June 12, 2011.

Release and Reception

Romance Joe held its world premiere at the 16th Busan International Film Festival on October 7, 2011, where it received the Citizen Reviewers' Award. The film was subsequently screened at various international film festivals, including the International Film Festival Rotterdam and the Vancouver International Film Festival. It received a theatrical release in South Korea on March 8, 2012.
