Pruning the Grapevine (Korean: 포도나무를 베어라; RR: Podonamuleul beeora) is a 2007 South Korean drama film directed by Min Byung-Hun. The film explores the internal struggle of a young man navigating the path toward priesthood while grappling with his personal desires.

Plot

The story follows Soo-hyeon, a student at a Catholic seminary who faces a crisis of faith and commitment. He struggles to choose between his religious vocation and his lingering feelings for a woman named Sue, whom he had previously left. During a visit to his ailing mother, Soo-hyeon attempts to reconnect with Sue, but she rejects his advances. Encouraged by his rector to seek clarity through a period of reflection at a monastery, Soo-hyeon initially finds a sense of peace. However, his resolve is tested when he encounters a novice named Helena, whose resemblance to Sue reignites his suppressed emotions.

Production and Release

Directed by Min Byung-Hun and written by Min and Park Hyun-Chul, the film was produced with a budget of approximately US$900,000. It features cinematography by Hyung-ju Kim, noted for its use of cool tones to reflect the protagonist's internal state and the austere environment of the monastery. The film was released in South Korea on February 22, 2007, with a runtime of 115 minutes.
