Pieta (2012 Film)
Pieta (Korean: 피에타) is a 2012 South Korean drama film written and directed by Kim Ki-duk. The film explores themes of vengeance, redemption, and human cruelty, set against the backdrop of the industrial landscape of Cheonggyecheon in Seoul.

Plot
The story follows Lee Gang-do (played by Lee Jung-jin), a ruthless enforcer working for a loan shark. Gang-do specializes in extorting money from desperate small-business owners by forcing them to maim themselves to collect insurance payouts. His life changes when a mysterious woman, Jang Mi-son (played by Jo Min-soo), appears, claiming to be his mother who abandoned him at birth. While initially skeptical and abusive toward her, Gang-do eventually allows her into his life, leading to a complex psychological transformation.

Production
Pieta was the 18th feature film directed by Kim Ki-duk. Principal photography took place over a short period, beginning on February 15, 2012, and concluding on March 9, 2012. The film is noted for its stark, literary dialogue style, which the director intentionally contrasted with colloquial speech.
Reception and Awards
The film achieved significant international recognition upon its release. It premiered at the 69th Venice Film Festival in September 2012, where it made history as the first South Korean film to win the Golden Lion for Best Film. Following this success, it was selected as the South Korean entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 85th Academy Awards.
