Phantom (2023 South Korean Film)

Phantom (Korean: 유령; RR: Yooryeong) is a 2023 South Korean action film written and directed by Lee Hae-Young. Set in 1933 during the Japanese occupation of Korea, the narrative centers on a group of individuals suspected of being spies for an anti-Japanese resistance organization.

Plot

In 1933, the Japanese colonial authorities in Gyeongseong (modern-day Seoul) attempt to root out a resistance operative known as "Phantom." Five individuals are identified as primary suspects: Junji Murayama, Park Cha-Kyung, Yuriko, Baek-Ho, and Section Chief Cheon. Under the direction of the security official Kaito, these suspects are lured into a trap and confined within a remote hotel. The film follows their efforts to prove their innocence and escape the facility.

Production

The film was directed by Lee Hae-Young, who also wrote the screenplay. Principal photography for the project took place from January 4, 2021, to May 21, 2021. The film was distributed by CJ Entertainment and released in South Korea on January 18, 2023.

At the 59th Daejong Film Awards held on November 15, 2023, the film received the award for Best Music.
