Nothing Serious (Korean: 연애 빠진 로맨스; RR: Yeonae Bbajin Romance) is a 2021 South Korean romantic comedy film directed by Jeong Ga-Young. The film explores the complexities of modern dating through the perspectives of its two protagonists, who meet via a dating application.

Plot

The story follows Woo-Ri (Son Suk-Ku), a 33-year-old aspiring novelist who currently works as a reporter writing a sex column. Despite his professional focus on romantic topics, he struggles with his own personal relationships and dislikes being alone. He crosses paths with Ja-Young (Jun Jong-Seo), a 29-year-old woman who has recently experienced a difficult breakup and financial setbacks. Having decided to swear off serious dating, she finds her resolve tested when she connects with Woo-Ri through a dating app.

Production

The film was directed by Jeong Ga-Young, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Wang Hye-Ji. During its development phase, the project was known by the working title Woo-Ri, Ja-Young. Principal photography for the film commenced on October 26, 2020, and concluded on December 29, 2020. The film was distributed by CJ Entertainment and released in South Korea on November 24, 2021, with a total runtime of 95 minutes.

Reception

At the 58th Baeksang Arts Awards held on May 6, 2022, the film received the award for Best Screenplay, credited to Jeong Ga-Young and Wang Hye-Ji.
