Mugiko-san (2013 Film)

Mugiko-san (Japanese: 麦子さんと) is a 2013 Japanese drama film directed by Keisuke Yoshida. The screenplay was written by Keisuke Yoshida and Ryo Nishihara. The film explores themes of family estrangement and reconciliation through the story of a young woman who reconnects with her mother after years of separation.

Plot

Mugiko Koiwa (Maki Horikita) lives with her older brother, Norio (Ryuhei Matsuda), following the death of their father. Their mother, Ayako (Kimiko Yo), had abandoned the family when Mugiko was a young child, and the two have had no contact for years. The narrative follows the emotional complications that arise when Ayako suddenly reappears in their lives, concealing a terminal illness from her children.

Production

The film was directed by Keisuke Yoshida. Principal photography concluded on February 16, 2013. Filming locations included Tsuru City in Yamanashi Prefecture and various suburbs of Tokyo.
