Monstrum (2018 Film)
Monstrum (Korean: 물괴; RR: Moolgwoe) is a 2018 South Korean historical action film directed by Huh Jong-ho. Set during the 16th century in the Joseon dynasty, the film blends historical drama with creature-feature elements.

Plot
The story takes place during a period of plague in Joseon. Rumors circulate regarding a terrifying creature inhabiting the mountains, causing widespread panic. King Jungjong (Park Hee-soon) recalls his former general, Yoon Gyeom (Kim Myung-min), from retirement to investigate the threat. Accompanied by his daughter Myung (Hyeri), his trusted associate Sung Han (Kim In-kwon), and a young officer named Heo (Choi Woo-sik), Yoon Gyeom sets out to uncover the truth behind the beast.
Production
The film is inspired by historical records from 1527, which describe King Jungjong relocating his residence to avoid a creature reported at the palace. The project underwent several developmental changes; it was initially titled Jakseoui Byeon - Moolgwoeui Seubgyeok (literally "Attack of the Strange Object"). Director Shin Jung-won was originally attached to the project, but later withdrew, leading to a shift in the film's tone from a fantasy-historical piece to an action-oriented narrative. Actor Jung Woo-sung was initially offered the lead role but declined. Principal photography took place from April 10, 2017, to July 21, 2017.
