Memories of Murder (2003 Film)
Memories of Murder (Korean: 살인의 추억; RR: Salinui Chueok) is a 2003 South Korean crime thriller directed by Bong Joon-ho. The film is based on the real-life Hwaseong serial murder case, which took place in Gyeonggi Province between 1986 and 1991.

Plot
Set in 1986, the story follows the investigation into a series of brutal rapes and murders in a rural province. Two local detectives, Park Doo-man (played by Song Kang-ho) and Cho Yong-koo (Kim Roe-ha), struggle to solve the crimes using traditional, often violent, investigative methods. They are joined by Seo Tae-yoon (Kim Sang-kyung), a detective from Seoul who relies on systematic evidence and documentation. The film depicts the escalating tension between the detectives as they fail to identify the perpetrator, leading to a sense of profound frustration and despair.

Historical Context
The film is inspired by the Hwaseong serial murders, a series of ten killings that occurred within a 2-kilometer radius in Gyeonggi Province. The victims ranged in age from a 13-year-old schoolgirl to a 71-year-old grandmother. The real-world investigation involved the interrogation of over 3,000 suspects and the participation of approximately 300,000 police officers. Despite the scale of the operation, no individual was indicted for the crimes at the time.
