May 18 (2007 Film)
May 18 (Korean: 화려한 휴가; RR: Hwaryeohan Hyooga) is a 2007 South Korean historical drama film directed by Kim Ji-hoon. The film dramatizes the events of the Gwangju Uprising, a democratic movement that occurred in Gwangju, South Korea, in May 1980.

Plot
Set against the backdrop of the 1980 Gwangju Uprising, the story follows the lives of ordinary citizens caught in the political turmoil. The narrative centers on Kang Min-woo, a taxi driver, and his younger brother, Jin-woo. As military forces move into the city to suppress student-led protests at Chonnam National University, the brothers and their community are forced to confront the escalating violence. The film portrays the citizens' transition from peaceful protesters to an armed militia as they attempt to defend their city after the military initially retreats, only to prepare for a larger offensive.
Production
While the film is based on the historical Gwangju Uprising, the central characters are fictional. Production required significant logistical preparation to recreate the 1980 setting. Filming took place on a 12-acre set located at the High-tech Science Industrial Park in northern Gwangju. The production utilized over 600 extras to recreate the scale of the protests.
