Mate (Korean: 메이트; RR: Meiteu) is a 2019 South Korean romantic drama film written and directed by Jung Dae-Gun. The film explores the complexities of modern relationships and the transition from casual dating to deeper emotional commitment.

Plot

The story follows Joon-Ho (played by Sim Hee-Seop), who begins a new job at a magazine company. There, he encounters Eun-Ji (played by Jung Hye-Sung), a woman he previously met through a dating application. Joon-Ho proposes a casual, non-committal relationship. However, as they spend time together, Joon-Ho finds his feelings for the warm and positive Eun-Ji growing, challenging his initial desire for a responsibility-free arrangement.

Production

The film was directed and written by Jung Dae-Gun. Principal photography for the project commenced on November 28, 2016, and concluded on December 23, 2016. The film held its world premiere at the Jeonju International Film Festival on May 4, 2018, before receiving a theatrical release in South Korea on January 17, 2019.
