Plot

The story follows King Gwanghae, who, fearing assassination, orders his councilor Heo Gyun to find a body double to occupy the throne. Heo Gyun discovers Ha-sun, a humble clown who bears a striking resemblance to the monarch and possesses an uncanny ability to mimic his speech and mannerisms. When the King is incapacitated by poisoning, Ha-sun is installed as his replacement. As he navigates the complexities of the royal court, Ha-sun's genuine empathy and humane approach to governance begin to influence the court and the people, creating tension with factions plotting against the throne.

Production

The project underwent several development changes before production commenced. Initial plans involved director Kang Woo-suk and actor Jung Jae-young, who departed the project in June 2011 due to creative differences with the production company, CJ Entertainment. Lee Byung-hun was cast in the dual lead role in November 2011. Principal photography took place at Namyangju Studios in Gyeonggi Province, beginning on February 12, 2012, and concluding on June 14, 2012.
