Mask Girl is a South Korean thriller television series released on Netflix on August 18, 2023. The series consists of seven episodes and is directed by Kim Yong-Hoon, who also contributed to the writing. The show is an adaptation of the webcomic of the same name by Mae Mi, which was serialized on Naver between August 15, 2015, and June 9, 2018.

Plot Overview

The story follows Kim Mo-Mi, an office worker who harbors a childhood dream of performing on stage. Despite feeling insecure about her appearance, she takes pride in her physique. To fulfill her desire for attention and validation, she adopts a secret persona, wearing a mask to stream live broadcasts as the internet personality "Mask Girl." Her double life leads to an unexpected series of events that entangle her with her colleague, Joo Oh-Nam, and his mother, Kim Kyung-Ja.

Production and Casting

The series is noted for its unique casting approach, with multiple actresses portraying the protagonist, Kim Mo-Mi, at different stages of her life. Lee Han-Byul was cast as the primary version of the character following an extensive audition process that included approximately 1,000 applicants. Mask Girl serves as Lee Han-Byul's debut acting role.
