Kuroyuri Danchi (The Complex)

Kuroyuri Danchi, internationally known as The Complex, is a 2013 Japanese horror film directed by Hideo Nakata. The film centers on Asuka, a young woman who moves into a residential apartment complex unaware of the site's tragic history involving mysterious deaths that occurred thirteen years prior.

Plot

Asuka, played by Atsuko Maeda, settles into her new home at the Kuroyuri apartment complex. She soon begins to hear unsettling scratching sounds emanating from the neighboring apartment. The situation escalates when the elderly resident living next door is found dead, a discovery prompted by the persistent ringing of his alarm clock. Following this event, Asuka experiences a series of increasingly disturbing supernatural incidents. She seeks assistance from Shinobu Sasahara, a professional cleaner who specializes in clearing the homes of the recently deceased, to investigate the history of the apartment and its former occupant.

Production

The film was directed by Hideo Nakata and written by Nakata, Junya Kato, and Ryuta Miyake. Principal photography for the production concluded in mid-July 2012. The film was distributed by Shochiku and features a runtime of 106 minutes.

Release and Festivals

The film held its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in January 2013 and was released in Japan on May 18, 2013. It was featured at several international film festivals, including the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, the New York Asian Film Festival, the Udine Far East Film Festival, the Fantasia Film Festival, and the Warsaw Film Festival.
