In January 2024, the administrative status of the region was officially changed from a province to a special self-governing state, now formally referred to as Jeonbuk State. This change grants the region greater administrative autonomy in various local governance matters.

The capital city of the region is Jeonju, which is widely recognized for its historic Hanok Village and its status as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy.
