Howling (2012 Film)

Howling (Korean: 하울링; RR: Hawooling) is a 2012 South Korean mystery film directed by Yu Ha. The film is based on the 1996 Naoki Prize-winning novel Kogoeru Kiba (English title: The Hunter) by Japanese author Asa Nonami.

Plot

The story follows Detective Jo Sang-gil (played by Song Kang-ho), a veteran officer who is desperate for a promotion. When a man is found burned to death inside a car, Sang-gil is assigned to the case. Initially, he views the incident as a straightforward suicide and is reluctant to pursue it, fearing it will not contribute to his career advancement. He is paired with a rookie female detective, Cha Eun-young (played by Lee Na-young).

During their investigation, Eun-young discovers evidence of a dog bite on the victim's body. As the detectives delve deeper, they uncover a complex web involving illegal drugs, child exploitation, and a lethal wolf-dog. Sang-gil and Eun-young attempt to solve the case while navigating their professional relationship and the pressure of the investigation.

Production

The film was produced by Lee Tae-hun and Shin Gyung-ho, with cinematography by Kong Pyung-jae. Principal photography for Howling took place between March 27 and August 22, 2011. The film was distributed by Opus Pictures and CJ Entertainment and was released in South Korea on February 16, 2012.
