Hochi Film Awards

The Hochi Film Awards (Japanese: 報知映画賞) are an annual film industry ceremony in Japan. Established in 1976, the awards are presented by Sports Hochi, a prominent Japanese sports newspaper. The ceremony typically takes place in November or December of each year to honor significant contributions to cinema.

Background and Scope

The awards recognize excellence across several categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best New Artist. In addition to domestic Japanese productions, the organization presents an award for Best International Picture. Occasionally, the committee grants a Special Award to individuals or works that have made a notable impact on the film industry.

Selection Process

As a publication-sponsored event, the awards are determined by the editorial staff and contributors associated with Sports Hochi. The ceremony is considered one of the established domestic film honors in Japan, reflecting the critical and popular reception of films released within the calendar year.
