Early Life and Education

Han Hyo-joo was born in Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea. During her childhood, she excelled in sports and enjoyed track and field events. In her sophomore year of high school, she relocated to Seoul to attend Bulgok High School, despite initial strict opposition from her father. After completing high school, she pursued higher education at Dongguk University, majoring in theatre.

Acting Career

Han entered the entertainment industry after winning the grand prize in the Miss Bing-geure contest in 2003. Her early acting credits included roles in the sitcom Nonstop 5 and the film My Boss, My Teacher in 2005. She secured her first leading television role in the KBS2 drama Spring Waltz (2006), directed by Yun Seok-ho.

That same year, she transitioned to feature films with a leading role in the independent drama Ad-Lib Night, directed by Lee Yoon-ki. Her performance earned critical acclaim, including Best Actress accolades at the 26th Korean Movie Critics Organization Awards and the 20th Singapore International Film Festival.

Her commercial breakthrough arrived in 2009 with the SBS drama series Brilliant Legacy co-starring Lee Seung-ki. The series achieved domestic viewership ratings exceeding 40 percent, establishing Han as a leading young actress in South Korea. Following this success, she took on the title role in the MBC historical drama Dong Yi (2010), which further solidified her status in television.
