Futureless Things (2014 Film)

Futureless Things (Korean: 이것이 우리의 끝이다; RR: Yigeotyi Wooriui Ggeutyida) is a 2014 South Korean drama film directed by Kim Kyung-Mook. The film depicts the daily lives and struggles of young people working part-time jobs at a convenience store on the outskirts of town.

Plot

The narrative is structured around the timeline of a single day at a 24-hour convenience store. At 7:00 AM, Ki-Chul (Gong Myung) begins his shift, receiving training from Ha-Na (Lee Hwa-Kyum), who is preparing to leave her position. Throughout the day, various individuals—including students, dropouts, and musicians—pass through the store to work their shifts. The film concludes in the evening when the store's power fails, leaving customers locked out and forcing an abrupt end to the day's events.

Production and Release

Futureless Things was directed by Kim Kyung-Mook, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Hwang Ji-Hee. The film was produced by Shin Yoo-Jae and Kim Kyung-Mook, with cinematography by Kang Guk-Hyun. It held its world premiere at the 15th Jeonju International Film Festival in May 2014 and was officially released in South Korea on June 26, 2014. The film has a runtime of 105 minutes and was distributed by KT&G Sangsangmadang.

Reception

The film received recognition for its contribution to independent cinema, notably winning the Independent Film Support Award at the 34th Korean Association of Film Critics Awards in 2014.
