East of Eden (Korean: 에덴의 동쪽; RR: Edenui Dongjjuk) is a South Korean television drama series that aired on the MBC network from August 25, 2008, to March 10, 2009. The series spans 56 episodes and features a large ensemble cast, including Song Seung-Heon, Yeon Jeong-Hun, Lee Da-Hae, Han Ji-Hye, and Lee Yeon-Hee.

Plot

The narrative centers on the rivalry between two families, initiated by the actions of Shin Tae-hwan, a ruthless managing director at a coal mine in Taebaek. Driven by ambition, Shin Tae-hwan causes the death of a miner named Lee Ki-chul. Following a betrayal involving a nurse named Mi-ae, she orchestrates a vengeful scheme by switching the sons of Shin Tae-hwan and Lee Ki-chul at the hospital where they were born on the same day. This act of retaliation fundamentally alters the lives and destinies of the two children as they grow up.

Production

The series was directed by Kim Jin-Man and Ashbun, with a screenplay written by Na Yeon-Suk and Lee Hong-Koo. The production was notable for its significant budget, with costs for the series totaling approximately 25 billion KRW (roughly 23 million USD).
