Dark Figure of Crime (2018 Film)

Dark Figure of Crime (Korean: 암수살인; RR: Amsusalin) is a 2018 South Korean crime drama film directed by Kim Tae-gyun. The film is based on true events and explores the psychological battle between a dedicated detective and a convicted murderer who confesses to additional, previously unknown crimes.

Plot

The story follows Kim Hyung-min (Kim Yun-seok), a detective in Busan who prioritizes solving cases over career advancement. His path crosses with Kang Tae-o (Ju Ji-hoon), a man who is arrested for the murder of his girlfriend. While in prison, Tae-o contacts Hyung-min, claiming responsibility for six other murders that have not yet been linked to any perpetrator. While others remain skeptical of the prisoner's claims, Hyung-min is convinced of their veracity and begins an investigation to identify the victims and uncover the truth behind the confessions.

Production

The film was directed by Kim Tae-gyun, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Kwak Kyung-taek. Principal photography for the film commenced on August 14, 2017, and concluded on November 7, 2017.

Awards

The film's screenplay, written by Kwak Kyung-taek and Kim Tae-gyun, received recognition at several major South Korean film ceremonies in 2018 and 2019, including the 55th Baeksang Arts Awards and the 39th Blue Dragon Film Awards.
