Commitment (2013 Film)

Commitment (Korean: 동창생; RR: Dongchangsaeng), also known by its literal title Alumni, is a 2013 South Korean action-drama film directed by Park Hong-Soo. The film centers on the story of a young North Korean man who is coerced into working as a deep-cover operative in South Korea to ensure the safety of his younger sister.

Plot

The story follows Ri Myung-Hoon (played by T.O.P), whose father was a North Korean spy killed after being betrayed by his own government. Following his father's death, Myung-Hoon and his younger sister, Hye-In (Kim You-Jung), are sent to a forced labor camp. To secure their release, Myung-Hoon agrees to a deal with a high-ranking North Korean military official, Moon Sang-Chul (Jo Sung-Ha). He undergoes rigorous training before infiltrating South Korea as a defector.

While living with a North Korean spy couple posing as his adoptive parents, Myung-Hoon attends a local high school. He encounters a classmate also named Lee Hye-In (Han Ye-Ri), whom he eventually grows close to. As he navigates his double life, he receives orders to eliminate a North Korean operative known as "Big Dipper." Amidst political instability in North Korea, Myung-Hoon finds himself increasingly isolated and targeted.

Production

The film underwent a change in leadership during its development. Director Park Shin-Woo was originally attached to the project but departed due to creative differences with the production company, The Lamp. Following a temporary production halt in August 2012 caused by Typhoon Bolaven, Park Shin-Woo finalized his decision to leave the project.

Principal photography commenced on July 11, 2012, and concluded on January 21, 2013. Filming took place in Yongin City, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. The final scene captured for the film was the climactic confrontation between the characters Ri Myung-Hoon, Moon Sang-Chul, and the South Korean intelligence officer Cha Jung-Min (Yoon Je-Moon).
