Cobweb (2023 Film)

Cobweb (Korean: 거미집; RR: Geomijib) is a 2023 South Korean dark comedy film directed by Kim Jee-woon. The film explores the creative struggles of a filmmaker working within the restrictive environment of the South Korean film industry during the 1970s, a period characterized by heavy government censorship.

Plot

The story follows Director Kim, played by Song Kang-ho, who is haunted by the critical failure of his previous works despite his early success. After experiencing a recurring dream, he becomes convinced that reshooting the ending of his latest project, also titled Cobweb, will transform it into a masterpiece. He attempts to secure two days for the reshoot, but faces significant logistical and creative obstacles.

Production

The film was directed by Kim Jee-woon with a screenplay written by Shin Youn-shick. Principal photography for the production commenced on March 8, 2022, and concluded on June 6, 2022. The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 25, 2023, before its general release in South Korea on September 27, 2023.

Reception and Awards

Cobweb received recognition at several major South Korean film ceremonies. At the 44th Blue Dragon Film Awards in 2023, the film won awards for Best Supporting Actress (Jeon Yeo-been) and Best Art Design. Additionally, at the 59th Daejong Film Awards, Oh Jung-se was awarded Best Supporting Actor for his performance.
