Chieko Baisho

Chieko Baisho (born June 29, 1941) is a Japanese actress and singer. Born in Kita-ku, Tokyo, she has maintained a prolific career in Japanese cinema spanning several decades. She is widely recognized for her portrayal of Sakura Suwa, the sister of the protagonist Torajiro Kuruma, in the long-running Otoko wa Tsurai yo film series.

Career

Baisho's career began in the 1960s, and she became a staple of Japanese film through her collaboration with director Yoji Yamada. Her role as Sakura in the Otoko wa Tsurai yo series, which began in 1969, established her as a household name in Japan. Beyond her work in live-action cinema, she has contributed her voice to animated films, most notably providing the voice for Sophie in the 2004 Studio Ghibli production Howl's Moving Castle.

Throughout her career, she has appeared in numerous films including The Yellow Handkerchief (1977), A Distant Cry from Spring (1980), and The Little House (2014). Her work has been recognized with various awards in the Japanese film industry.

Chieko Baisho is the sister of actress Mitsuko Baisho.
