Chiaki Kuriyama (栗山千明) is a Japanese actress and singer born on October 10, 1984, in Tsuchiura, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. She gained international recognition for her prominent roles in influential Japanese and international cinema, most notably as Takako Chigusa in Kinji Fukasaku's Battle Royale (2000) and as the weapon-wielding schoolgirl Gogo Yubari in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003).

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Born in Ibaraki Prefecture, Kuriyama began her career in the entertainment industry as a child model and actress during the mid-1990s. Her early film credits include appearances in projects such as Toire no Hanako-san (1995) and Gonin (1995), before establishing herself in mainstream Japanese cinema around the turn of the millennium.

Breakthrough Roles

Kuriyama achieved wider notice with her performance in the thriller Ju-on: The Curse (2000) and her breakout turn as student #13 Takako Chigusa in the dystopian action film Battle Royale (2000). Her portrayal of the fierce student caught the attention of international filmmakers, leading to her casting in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003) as Gogo Yubari, the deadly bodyguard of O-Ren Ishii.
