Canola (2016 Film)

Canola (Korean: 계춘할망; RR: Gyechoonhalmang) is a 2016 South Korean drama film directed by Chang. The film explores the emotional reunion between an elderly woman and her granddaughter after a long separation.

Plot

The story follows Gye-Choon, a haenyeo (female diver) living on Jeju Island, and her granddaughter, Hye-Ji. After going missing for 12 years, Hye-Ji returns to her grandmother's life as a troubled teenager harboring a significant secret. The narrative centers on their attempts to reconnect and the challenges posed by the secrets Hye-Ji keeps.

Production

Principal photography for Canola commenced on April 21, 2015, on Jeju Island. Production concluded on July 9, 2015, at a set in Paju, South Korea. The final scene filmed for the production involved the character Gye-Choon reacting to the discovery of a secret kept by Hye-Ji.

Youn Yuh-Jung portrays the grandmother, Gye-Choon.

Kim Go-Eun portrays the granddaughter, Hye-Ji.
