Background and Source Material
The series is based on the Naver webcomic titled Sanyanggaedeul, authored and illustrated by Jung Chan, which was serialized between May 16, 2019, and December 24, 2020. The television adaptation was directed and written by Kim Joo-Hwan. For lead actor Woo Do-Hwan, the project marked his return to acting following his enlistment in the South Korean military on July 6, 2020.
Plot Synopsis
The narrative follows Kim Gun-Woo, played by Woo Do-Hwan, a promising young boxer whose mother falls deeply into debt with a ruthless and powerful loan shark named Kim Myeong-Gil (Park Sung-Woong). To clear his mother's financial obligations, Gun-Woo abandons his boxing career and takes up work under President Choi (Heo Jun-Ho).
President Choi was previously a towering figure within the clandestine moneylending industry before vanishing from public view. Upon his return, he utilizes his resources to extend interest-free loans to individuals trapped in financial distress. Alongside colleagues such as Kim Hyeon-Ju (Kim Sae-Ron) and Hong Woo-Jin (Lee Sang-Yi), Gun-Woo navigates the dangerous underworld of predatory lending and corporate corruption.
