Backstreet Rookie
Backstreet Rookie (Korean: 편의점 샛별이) is a South Korean television series that aired on SBS from June 19 to August 8, 2020. The drama consists of 16 episodes and was broadcast in the Friday and Saturday 22:00 time slot. It is based on the webcomic Pyeonuijeom Saetbyeoli, written by Hwalhwasan and illustrated by Geumsagong, which was serialized on the platform Toptoon from August 11, 2016, to December 8, 2017.
Plot
The story follows Choi Dae-Hyun, a man who manages a family-owned convenience store. Years earlier, he encountered a group of high school students, including Jung Saet-Byul, who asked him to purchase cigarettes for them. Dae-Hyun declined and offered them advice instead. Years later, an adult Jung Saet-Byul returns to apply for a part-time position at his convenience store.
Production
The series was directed by Lee Myung-Woo with a screenplay by Son Geun-Joo. The first script reading for the production took place in South Korea in February 2020. The series occupied the SBS time slot previously held by The King: Eternal Monarch and was succeeded by the drama Alice.
